for everyone

I bought my HP Mini 2140 last Friday at Complink, SM North - Cyberzone (New Annex). PC live sells them too,
this is where I first got the news that it was coming, a week earlier!

Here’s my “mini” review =P

Basic Specs:
Intel Atom CPU N270 1.6GHz
1 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
 (upgradeable upto 2GB)
Windows XP SP3
Mobile Intel GMA 950
10.1″ display
160 GB HDD 5400 rpm SATA
Broadcom WiFi 802.11 b/g
Bluetooth
2 USB 2.0
Integrated VGA webcam
3-cell battery

Other Features:
It has an Expresscard 52 slot, great for adding things like TV Tuner or a Broadband/sim card adapter.
92% Keyboard that is great for seasoned touch typists or Typing of the Dead agents.
It has spill resistant keys, The letters on the keys has a special coating that extends its durability 10x.

What it doesn’t have:
As expected from a business class package, things are as exciting as watching a cow eat grass for 2 hours.
The box has no carrying handle, no frills design. It does not come with a sleeve, no cleaning cloth.
No fancy eye candies and knick knack goodies here.

2133 vs. 2140 vs. 1109TU
Aside from having an atom processor and lower resolution (yes lower than 1024×600), here are some other notable
difference with the 2133:

The 2140’s Camera image is much clearer (due to the software). The touch pad switch lights up when it’s disabled, the 2133 does it the other way around .

The Deal Breakers:
Lower Resolution; The 1109TU and the 2140 has the same resolutions of 1024×576 pixels. Those who might be using their system for photoshop on the go will be disappointed.

The real deal breaker with the 2140 (specially for people who is not used to laptops or UMPC’s) is the 3 cell battery it comes with. Samsung’s NC10 is much more well rounded but samsung doesn’t sell them here.

It was a tough choice choosing between the new 1109TU and the 2140. You just have to ask yourself which of the 2 is your preference:

Form or Functionality.

In this case it can’t be both. The 1109TU is sleeker but has less features for what it's worth. The box is similar to console gaming systems and has a convenient carrying handle. The unit itself is lighter by about .09 pounds and the memory is easier to upgrade by yourself. 80 GB of storage space is not bad, but you might want more.

The 2140 has more but it’s not as eye-catchy as the swirly finger print magnet coating of the 1109TU. What made me choose the 2140 is the VGA port, the sturdy aluminum casing, more durable keys, separate mic, headphone jacks and more storage space which makes up for the price difference. ^^

The Verdict:
For people more in to looks doesn’t do presentations, buy the mini 1109TU (new model!). For people who wants more features, and doesn't want their gadget to look like a child's toy, get the 2140. Most stores has 0 interest up to 12 months, get them while there’s still stocks left. The recession won't discourage people with its amazing price of P23, 950 php. I wasn't expecting it but Complink throws in a free "Run on Shine" portable mouse by A4Tech.

If you’re concern is the battery, you could order a 6 cell battery from the store you bought it. They say it takes only 3 business days but this might set you back 3 to 5k php. >.<

hey! just read your blog.. im planning to buy this model as a downgrade from my acer aspire4520.. i have a desktop na for heavy computing so a 14" laptop isnt quite good, mobility wise.

just wondering, does it fair well in 3d programs like autocad and photoshop? what programs are u running on your unit man? thanks

Hi, thanks for dropping by!

I haven't tried out anything graphic-intensive with it yet. For being a netbook it does very well what it's intended to do; light to moderate processing.

Surfing the net through WiFi is fast, pages load up quickly at .9mb/s. Transferring images and files from an SD card is a breeze.
MS Office (comes with the 2007 version,60-day trial) runs smoothly, and all this at a default configuration of 1.00 GB RAM.

I was thinking of installing Photoshop but due the mini not standing up to default resolution requirements, I hesitated to undergo the procedure. There are people around the net who have tried CS3 and CS4 with positive results on the HP mini 1000.The 2140 typically has the same specs as the HP Mini 1000 so it wouldn't be that much of a problem.

For now I'm only using programs that came with it.

For benchmark tests with the mini 1000, you can check out YouTube. Just use the following keywords: HP mini 1000 benchmark test

Hi. It's too bad we don't have Complink here in Davao. I need a netbook desperately. I saw an HP 1001TU being sold in one of the stores here at PhP19K-- do you know the difference with HP1001TU and 1109TU? Also, does the HP 2140 have a built-in mic?

Thanks. Btw, nice review. Very helpful!

Thanks! =)
A lot of PC shops, like Accent Micro, PC Live and Electroworld are now selling the HP 2140 but not all of them are offering the 12 months 0% interest scheme.

The notable difference between the 2 models are their RAM and storage capacity.
The HP 1001TU has 512MB of RAM and a 60GB hard disk, while the 1109TU has 1024 MB RAM and an 80GB hard disk. The 1109TU is a better choice since it is priced at 18,800 - 19,000php. You get more bang for your bucks.

The HP 2140 has a built in microphone and the Camera's software allows you to record sound with it.. When you activate the camera you get to choose between taking a snap shot, recording a video with audio, or just plain audio. You can use it with Yahoo messenger, msn or Skype. ^^

hi! would you know if hp 2140 could handle stat programs like STATA?
segagiga wrote on Apr 24, '09
It's not a dual core processor, don't expect miracles. Stata is designed to work with multi-core CPUs. A Celeron 430 @ 1.8 GHz performs twice as much than its Atom CPU.

You're better off using a notebook than a netbook for such task.

awesome review. Back in the states its worth like 499 dollars which is like 24-25 k in pesos. anyway thanks for the fab review. xx

Thanks! I just hope they'll sell the accessories at similar prices too.
They're quite expensive here at the moment. For example the 6 cell battery is 90 to 120 USD but if you'll pre-order it here, it costs almost half the price of the netbook which is ridiculous. >.
